About Basholi Panchamukha Shiva

This painting is a reproduction and the original is currently in the Chandigarh Museum (India) archives.

Here Shiva is seen seated on elephant hide, has five faces and ten arms each carrying different attributes. He’s seen wearing a garland of skulls and adorned with numerous snakes. His body is anointed with sacred marks. Each one of the faces is pointing in different direction Purva (East), Dakshina (South), Pashchima (West) , Uttara (North), and Urdhva (Upward). They have different names Sadyojata, Vamadeva, aghora, tatpurusha and Ishana.

Bright colours are a common feature of the Basholi tradition. The fair complexion of Shiva against a bright background is very striking and makes the painting interesting.
