About Basholi Sarawathi
The meaning of these lines is , “I pray to Goddess Saraswathi who is mounted on swan and bears veena and book in her arms, to bestow knowledge upon me “
Saraswathi blesses the devout with knowledge and wisdom. In this painting, she is seen mounted on a white swan and holding a book and a Rudraksha Mala (rosary) in both her arms. The other two arms are seen playing the Veena. She’s seated on a white lotus, having a meditative expression on her face.
The painting has three layers, first a very thin layer of sky, the main figure in the middle, and at the bottom is the ground with grass. The attention is focused on the Devi. She’s adorned with gold bracelets, Motis (pearls) and beetle wings representing emeralds in jewellery.
The presence of Motis, beetle wings and a thin strand of hair falling on the face are the characteristics of the Basohli school.
This painting is a reproduction of original work by my Guruji Padmashri Sri. Vijay Sharma ji.
