Iconographic Commentary & Symbolism

Tantric Devi in all her magnificence occupies the core area of this painting. There are series of paintings in Basohli tradition that focus on the tantric aspects of Devi and Shiva. Here, she appears poised though adorned with multiple arms and attributes. She is universal mother and symbolic of power and valour and engaged in the act of protecting her children. She is the cosmic form of shakti and carries the attributes of both Shiva and Vishnu. The diffused lotus petals form a firm base balancing her otherwise suspended state. The bright red border provides good contrast to the green background.
