Iconographic Commentary & Symbolism
During the cosmic churning of the ocean, Dhanvantari emerged holding a pot filled with amrita (the nectar of immortality). Dhanvantari is the physician of the devas, and he is regarded as an avatar of Vishnu. He is mentioned in the Puranas as the god of Ayurveda.
In this painting in the Basohli style, the god Dhanvantri is shown seated cross-legged in the silver medallion, emitting rays. The white-complexioned deity sports a beard and top-knot (shikha). In his hand, he holds a pot filled with elixir. The bluish background creates a placid ambience and suggests sky.
