Iconographic Commentary & Symbolism

Radha and Krishna are the most celebrated couple in the love poetry and in Pahari painting tradition. This painting is the visual counterpart of a love poem by Rasakhan who is one among the many poets belonging to cross-religious bhakti tradition.

The poet is fascinated by how Radha and Krishna lost in love play forget their daily chores. The poet finds them immersed in love on the banks of Yamuna, as it in impossible to hide the moonlight with one’s hands however clever the person maybe.
