Iconographic Commentary & Symbolism

Rama is seen seated on a lotus with folded legs adorned with a golden crown that is studded with lotus buds. He wears pearl strands that have gold locket studded with beetle wing cases which represent emeralds. His body is smeared with sacred marks or sandal paste. These features distinguish divine figures from the mundane beings. Apart from these aspects, Rama and Krishna are always painted in blue and seen wearing Pitambara (yellow dhoti) in Pahari painting tradition.

A thin strip of sky, plain background in bold colour, a layer of water with lotus leaves and flowers and a prominent figure in the center are distinguishing features of a Basohli painting.
