Iconographic Commentary & Symbolism

The tantric devi series in Basohli tradition posses savage intensity. The Devi here is Shyama, the dark complexioned one drinking wine from a cup in one hand and holding two lotuses and a garland of skull in the other hand. Her teeth protrude out and she assumes a form difficult to comprehend unless accompanied by a verse which describes her. She is adorned with pearl strands, beetle wing jewellery and lotus studded golden crown as seen in other Devis of the series.
