Iconographic Commentary & Symbolism

This is one the many Tantric deities from the Basohli school of Pahari miniature tradition. Devi is found seated on a lotus occupying majority of the space as she poses in her benign and gracious form holding lotus in her arm. Her image in the center is balanced by a narrow strip of sky on the top and a band of water at the bottom. The halo and the emerging rays of silver are used symbolically to suggest her divine nature. She is rendered attractive by her adornments of long pearl strands, beetle wings for emeralds, crescent moon and sacred marks all over her body.
