Iconographic Commentary & Symbolism

Bhadrakali, the fierce tantric devi here is flanked by two divine figures at her service. They gaze at her in reverence. Devi in all her majesty is seated on a sprawling corpse, drinking wine from a bowl while holding a pair of lotuses in her other arm. The crown of the divine entities is made in gold and decorated with lotus buds. The profuse use of gold adds richness to the  colour and form.

Bright hues against a plain and contrasting background brings out the form that is accentuated by emphatic outlines in Basohli tradition and the usage of natural pigments creates an atmosphere that is unique to this tradition.
