Shiva Family Mysore
Iconographic Commentary & Symbolism
This composition belonging to Pahari tradition and seems to be unique in many ways. The dramatic, colourful and swirling clouds cover the skies as Shiva leads his family homeward. The landscape is filled with trees of different forms and hues. A stream of river flows through the dwellings and one can spot a Shiva temple in the distant background.
The divine couple share their chores. Shiva, the wanderer carries Shanmukha on his shoulder while mother Parvati cuddles the elephant god, Ganesha as she is seated on the patchwork- caprisoned bull. Shiva while leading the way lovingly looks behind in a caring manner to check if all is well.
